First I want to say a word about version control. Why use version control at all? It may be tempting if you download Koha and install it for your library to just edit the files to customize it for your local needs outside the context of a version control system.
In 2007 a group of libraries in Vermont began testing the use of Koha for Vermont libraries. At first a separate implementation was created for each library. Then the Vermont Organization of Koha Automated Libraries (VOKAL) was organized to create one database to be used by libraries. This database was rolled out in 2011. Fifty-seven libraries have chosen to adopt Koha and moved to the shared production environment hosted and supported by ByWater Solutions.[9] Another consortium of libraries in Vermont, the Catamount Library Network has also adopted Koha (also hosted by ByWater Solutions). Previously automated Vermont libraries used software from Follett, or other commercial software vendors.[10]

Abstract: This paper will introduce the reader to the world of freeware and open source software. Following a brief introduction, the author presents an overview of these types of software. Next comes a discussion of licensing issues unique to freeware and open source software, which leads directly to issues of registration. The author then offers several strategies readers can adopt to locate these software packages on the Web. The author then addresses questions regarding the use of freeware and open source software before offering a few closing thoughts.
Please do not use our APIs for bulk download of Open Library data because this affects our ability to serve patrons. We make our data publicly available each month for partners. If you want a dump of complete data, please read about your Bulk Download options, or email us at openlibrary@archive.org.
The Arduino environment can be extended through the use of libraries, just like most programming platforms. Libraries provide extra functionality for use in sketches, e.g. working with hardware or manipulating data. To use a library in a sketch, select it from Sketch > Import Library. A number of libraries come installed with the IDE, but you can also download or create your own. See these instructions for details on installing libraries. There is also a tutorial on writing your own libraries. See the API Style Guide for information on making a good Arduino-style API for your library.
With the advent of RFID technology, RFID has been introduced in the library. The free and efficient use of the newest resources of the information technology is a big step toward to the public free and rapid access to information and to the global documentation with high quality.
Big and unexpected efforts: A library will find out that, in order to succeed in getting a good result, the necessary efforts will have to be much bigger than the initially supposed ones in adapting the software to its needs.
The library integrated systems that are used in the Romanian university libraries are software products that were acquired from different suppliers. The cheapest is Liberty which is used at Transilvania University Library; Liberty is useful in libraries that possess up to 1 million volumes.
Koha is an Integrated Library System. It is a complete system. Being an open source software product, there is no costs for license. It can be installed and used free of charge, it can be adapted to local needs; it has the same characteristics as a commercial software product has.
Note : This plug-in requires the libcairo2-dev Linux package which may have to be installed by your IT support team. Requires Koha 17.05 or higher. Download Instructions Database DumperUse this plug-in to download a backup of your database content from the staff interface. Download Instructions Inter-Library LoanThis plug-in allow users to make request for documents that are unavailable at their library. Download Instructions Rule Hard Due DateThis plugin allows you to set a specific hard due date for a selected branch, patron cartegory and item type.
There are two major versions of the software: Greenstone2 and Greenstone3. Greenstone3 is under active development, and is recommended for download. We also provide maintenance releases for its forerunner, Greenstone2, which is widely used around the world. Greenstone3 is backwards compatible with Greenstone2 collections. If you are new to Greenstone we recommend downloading version 3. If you already have a Greenstone2 installation, you may choose between upgrading to the latest Greenstone2 release, or migrating to Greenstone3. The Librarian Interface in Greenstone3 includes a conversion tool to assist migrating collections.
Though, if training in house or if the tutorials are not enough, Koha offers free support as well as paid support depending on the extent of aid or training that must go into integrating the system to a particular library. The free support includes the manuals discussed above and also the Koha bug database that includes a list of problems that have been discovered to be typical problems users may face. The website also offers the ability to subscribe to their mailing list or to engage in their IRC, or real-time chat.
OLE (Open Library Environment) is a next-generation, library management system from the Kuali Foundation, a non-profit corporation that develops open-source software for Higher Education. OLE is the foundation's first piece of library software and was implemented by two early adopters in the USA in August 2014: The University of Chicago Library (Kuali, 2014a) and Lehigh University Library (Kuali, 2014b). Along with Koha and Evergreen, OLE is one of the few open-source library management systems on the market (1). Free and open-source software (FOSS) is becoming more widely used in libraries as an alternative to expensive proprietary software provided by large corporate vendors.
Kuali OLE is developed with a collaborative and open approach emphasising a blend of library and IT. There is a Project Board comprised of library directors and thought leaders and a Functional Council comprised of academic librarians; on the other side is a Technical Council comprised of library systems experts and HTC Global Services, the company developing the codebase. Each institution contributing to OLE assigns staff to the Functional Council and the Technical Council to make their voice heard on both library-specific and technical issues. The councils work together, rely on each others expertise, and in so doing have designed software that is made by librarians for libraries.
OLE is the latest in a series of FOSS products implemented at SOAS Library. It implemented VuFind (5) as its library catalogue and discovery interface in summer 2014. The library is also in the process of adopting SobekCM (6) as digital repository software for digitisation projects.
The library staff at SOAS Library had never previously been involved in a large-scale system implementation. Staff were not used to working on community-led systems projects, were not used to software testing, were unfamiliar with PRINCE2 project management methodology, and, in some cases, were unwilling or unable to stop using the legacy LMS.
